Not JUST "grass fed"
Our cattle graze organic, herbal leys. A diverse range of plants as well as the more conventional Ryegrass.
Traditional livestock farming would have seen cattle, sheep & even pigs grazing in meadows similar to ours, which would contain a wide variety of plant species. Each plant bringing their own benefit to the mix
Each plant bringing their own benefit to the mix.
But post war agriculture and the push to try & increase food production and ensure each piece of land was working to maximum output meant that the value of many of these plants in the sward was lost. Deemed to be of lower feed value and labelled as "weeds" - grasslands became much more monocultural.
This had a knock on effect on land, habitat & the wildlife that was living on farmland. Whilst Ryegrass is great for fattening up ruminants such as Cattle- it needs TLC in the form of fertiliser and herbicide application to ensure it stays in fine fettle and is not particularly favoured by Bees, birds or other insects.
However, opinions are changing! The realisation that farming in such a uniform way is not sustainable, nor giving much back to the land has seen some farmers making a return to grazing livestock on traditional meadows. Using herbs, wildflowers, Clover & a more diverse mix of grasses alongside Ryegrass to reduce or even eliminate the need for artificial fertiliser application or herbicide use.
Each plant has it's own purpose, some fix Nitrogen into the soil, some improve soil structure, some will grow under drought conditions whilst others are struggling. Many support Bees and other pollinators. The benefits to the livestock grazing the land are plentiful too - some plants can even offer protection against internal parasites! But ultimately, they are eating the diet nature intended.
This is regenerative farming, this is sustainable, this is farming alongside nature - this is the meat you get in our organic, pasture fed Beef boxes.
There's some new little faces waiting to see you down at the Milk shed. Calves.
We've been working out a way to do it & we're now a "Cow with calf" dairy system. This means that rather than separating Calves from cows after 5 days, each cow will continue to rear her Calf & give some milk through the milking parlour in order to keep up

We've been working out a way to do it & we're now a "Cow with calf" dairy system. This means that rather than separating Calves from cows after 5 days, each cow will continue to rear her Calf & give some milk through the milking parlour in order to keep up supply to the vending machine.
This way of doing dairy won't work on every farm and it isn't without It's hurdles! But we're really hoping we can make it work & it feels right for us & our way of doing things.
The Calves are funny, inquisitive little critters & would love to meet you very soon, pop by & pay them a visit!
